“Yoga therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of Yoga.” International Association of Yoga Therapists.
You might wonder what is the difference between regular yoga and yoga therapy?
All yoga is potentially therapeutic, but yoga therapy is a personalised, multi-dimensional approach that addresses all five layers of the self simultaneously.
Yoga therapy is a collaboration between the therapist and client with the therapist being a guide to offer prescriptive solutions from science backed yoga practices to help the client manage their own sense of recovery from injury or illness.
I work within The Minded Institute's model of yoga therapy which draws on neuroscience, yoga postures (asanas), breathing practices (pranayama) and mindfulness techniques to alleviate symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Yoga therapy can also be effective fo a wide range of physical conditions.
What conditions can Yoga Therapy help with?
Anybody can benefit whether it be that you want to tame unruly stress or keep it in check as a preventative measure.
You need not be experienced in yoga or mindfulness to appreciate the benefits.
These sessions can take place in-person or online via zoom.
What should I expect from a typical yoga therapy session:
The first time we meet , we will discuss your unique needs. Taking a holistic approach we include not just your health concern or condition but a whole person approach of physical, psychological and emotional factors that may be affecting your wellness.
During our first session I will will work with you to come up with a preliminary plan of daily practice. I generally recommend a minimum of three to six sessions to begin with.
Your plan will typically involve the elements of asana (yoga postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), and meditation. You are free to continue with other forms of treatment and, indeed, yoga can be used alongside other modalities very easily.
I will generally prescribe practices for you to do at home. Yoga therapy is about teaching you the skills that you can easily incorporate into your life. It is about empowering you to take control of your own health & wellness.
Yoga therapy meets each and every person where they are. No health presentation is too great nor too small. Yoga therapy sessions are client-led, client-focused, and compassion-focused. You are the master of your journey with me as your yoga therapist being a knowledgeable accompanier on your journey towards health and healing.

So pleased to have found Sandi’s yoga classes online whilst during the pandemic lockdown. After giving Sandi a call she reassured me by talking through what I wanted from a yoga class. She instantly could help me with my diabetic neuropathy, as she is a trained therapist too, her expertise knew exactly what my body needed to help calm my nervous system.
The classes are very welcoming and Sandi has an easy way of explaining clearly for you to understand. She is very knowledgeable and lets you go at your own pace. 1:1 sessions were so very helpful for me too as these yoga sessions are designed for your own needs.
Can highly recommend Sandi as a yoga teacher.
Can’t thank you enough Sandi how much you have helped me, I’ve just done one of your recordings tonight with meditation and I now know I will sleep like a baby.
Thank you so much Sandi. The 1-1 sessions were such a treat and a salve for my soul through one of the darkest journeys of my life.
Having been through a extremely stressful period where I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the start of the pandemic, I really don't think I would have managed without these yoga sessions.
Its still amazes me how simply learning to breathe properly again can have such a profound effect on my mind and body and I use these practices each time I am in chemotherapy.
Sandi, you were so supportive and gentle and so in tune with what I needed in each session.
The breathing techniques and simple yoga postures are now with me for life to help me through when I am struggling and I can't thank you enough for all your support.
After years of suffering from back pain and endless treatment and surgeries which never seemed to get to the root of the problem I am truly grateful for finally finding yoga.
Not a miracle cure, but with Sandi's guidance I have found a way to manage my pain.
In the 1-1 sessions we explored the nervous system and how my body may be responding to those messages at certain times.
This certainly made so much sense to me. I can't believe how simple breathing with movement can work so well to relieve these restrictions and blocks in my body and I have learnt so much in these 6 sessions about how my mind, emotions and physical body are connected.
